The Hoxton Bar and Grill is relatively busy yet when walking into the live-room where ‘The Spivs’ are playing, the venue is sparsely populated. Despite this the opening act blast through their energetic set. The sound is rooted in the heart of 1977, all splintering, thrashed power chords sounding like a stirring call to arms for a disenchanted fight for what, it doesn’t appear to matter. This is music for music’s sake, sounding authentic and rhythmically akin to ‘The Ramones’ or any other number of British Punk bands. All three members shout the repetitive refrains together in sync with song titles such as ‘Fifteen Minutes’ sounding tight and just a touch dangerous, evoking the essence of the well worn punk formula which in this room now, is still potent. Though lyrically going nowhere, and after just a fraction of the time elapsed that the song title states, it is over, perhaps this is the intended contrary point. ‘The Spivs’ however produce a scratchy and frantic rebel rousing sound that is brief, fast, loud and sweaty, true to the ethos of the movement the threesome successfully mimic.
